Claws, Class, & A Whole Lotta Sass by Julia Mills

Claws, Class and a Whole Lotta Sass
By Julia Mills

Blurb:

Hiding in plain sight as the Pack Healer for a bunch of wolves was the perfect cover…

Using ancient magic to hide her true nature hadn’t always been easy, but it beat the hell outta being dead...then he waltzed in. Six foot-nine inches of pure male dragon, looking better than a man had a right to and making her dragoness wake from a long hibernation to spread her wings, not only rocked Dannika’s world, it almost turned it upside-down. As if that wasn’t bad enough, an evil as old as time and twice as deadly has reared its ugly head. Her ability to hide behind her patented sassy attitude may have kept Dannika safe for all these years, but now the future of all things paranormal is at stake and only she holds the key to its survival...well, at least part of it.

It was supposed to be a simple cross country trip, but then, he’d heard that somewhere before…
Since the death of his father almost a century ago, Wolfe McCallum’s life had been a series of incredible ups and devastating downs that made riding a roller coaster seem like a walk in the park. It also didn’t help that he freely admitted to being more stubborn than a mule and twice as contrary. He prided himself on being able to outlast, out argue, or just plain irritate anyone on the planet into giving up without raising a single claw or breaking a sweat...until he damn near tripped over the most beautiful woman in the world.

One look…one kiss…one extraordinary night…

Secrets unlocked, Destiny knocking at the door, and a Fate that will not be denied. Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times, be prepared for sudden stops, and by all means – buckle up. Fireworks are the least of your worries when one bull-headed dragon and his sassy-since-birth dragoness are faced with saving not only themselves, but everyone and everything they hold dear.

The Universe may not make mistakes, but She doesn’t make things easy either. It’s gonna take claws, class, and a whole lotta sass to save the day this time.

My bakery is struck by lightning.

Firefighters show up to fight the blaze during the thunderstorm. Two of them wrap me up in a blanket, give me coffee, and take me home.

We agree to meet the next day.

And the next.

And the…you get the picture. Not surprising when I figure out I’m pregnant.

But they have a secret that they haven’t told me. I’m a boring old human.

They’re not.

“Do you still believe things are meant to be?”

“I didn’t either, but seeing you here... It can’t be just coincidence.”

Solitary is not an option for a Witch like Lael. Not when your best friend is hell-bent on pulling your love life out of moth balls. But for a seer like Lael, stumbling across someone to help turn up the heat is not an easy find. Not until fate blindsides you head long into the last man you ever expected to see again.

You’re not welcome. For Jet Ellis those words were something he’s had to live with for most of his life. Ever since his future went up in smoke the day he was forced from the magical life he was supposed to have. Why? For being a half-blood shifter.

Ten years have passed since and the two are thrown together in place they never expected to be. Old passions ignite, rekindling a fire than never truly died. But revelations from the past force them passed their own misgivings, when the two are threatened. Lives hang in the balance and they must hold onto each as they face a challenge that will either bring them together forever or destroy them for good.

I'm a New Yorker, born and bred, and my stories embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, I use my experiences from around the world in all my books. There isn't a place my characters live or travel to that I haven't been myself.
Like most authors, my love affair with the written word started as a child with the books I read. Even today, I love to read almost as much as I love to write. My favorite stories are the ones that bring me to places and introduce me to characters that leave me breathless, allowing me to dream in the world of 'what if?'

From the time I could write my name I've been scribbling stories. So it was no surprise when I earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, I decided to do what I love most full time. Write.

In the meantime I am also a founding member and former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre, and when I'm not 'bichok' (but in a chair hands on keyboard), I'm spending time with my husband and our three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places...for inspiration, of course!

Missing Linc by Ripley Prosperina

He emerged from the black waters to steal her heart.

As a child, Edythe found out there were different types of monsters. Some were beautiful on the outside, but terrifying when the lights went out. Others appeared to be creatures of nightmares, but were loyal and honorable, ready to sacrifice their lives for those they loved.

She learned the hard way which monster she preferred.

Linc knew to stay away from humans. His kind, wary of being discovered, swam deep in the sea. Aegeans were legends, shifting shape from water to land. All his life, Linc followed the rules, laws set down to keep Aegeans alive.

But then he saw Edythe.

One glimpse and he knew she was his. He’d risk everything to protect her: madness, torture.

Death.

Fate may have brought Edythe and Linc together, but the world seems set on tearing them apart.

Interview with Author Eden Walker
Eden stopped by to to chat with us a bit and hopefully get you excited for the book fair!

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a 46-year-old full-time writer who lives in the Western Cape of South Africa. I’m based in a small conservation village, where I live with my partner, my son, and my three adult step-kids (we used to have a Mini Schnauzer, but he went to the Great Supper in the Sky). I’ve worked as an actress and a psychologist, but I also studied English and as a child I was always writing. So when I had my son 6 years ago I took my chance to commit to being a career writer. It works well with being available to him and working from home. He’s also writing a book …

I love to cook and get in the sea with my child. I’m into meditation, dancing and running. I’m also a huge Marian Keyes fan. I’ve published poetry and short stories under a different name but writing romance is my passion.

2. What do you enjoy about being an author?
Writing. Writing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on, in my opinion. I love not knowing what will happen in a story I’m working on. It’s like a game of Cluedo, where you’re figuring out what’s going on. The characters are revealing themselves and their story to me, and that’s magic. It really doesn’t feel like work. It’s an absolute treat.

I guess quiet time in my own head is important to me. Being in that world I’m creating. Then again, sometimes when I’m driving or in the shower I will suddenly realise something: My God, he’s cheating on her! (I didn’t know that). So my books are with me throughout the day and I love that; it’s a much more positive thing to put energy into than, say, worrying about the economy. Though I do that too!

3. What type of romance stories do you write? And why?
Hot, humorous and heartfelt. I do series where secondary characters in one book will get their own romance in the next. The over-arching theme is strong women in sensual situations. My heroines know what they want and the sex they have is assertive, expressive and freeing. I guess the reason for this is that powerful women (or women who come into their own power during the story) interest and entertain me. For me the sex has to turn the reader on, else what’s the point?

Invariably my characters are human and fallible, which brings me to another of my criteria – humour. I need my stories to be funny as well as passionate (for my own sake). I want to laugh.  Love is always a part of it, even if I’m writing erotica. The setting can vary. And the heroes are all sorts of different types, from the most rugged to the most sophisticated, to the anti-hero. Next year I’ll be bringing you a romance where the hero is the nanny! A very hunky one of course. OK, you got me – the real reason I write romance is so I can spend soooooooo much time with the hero!

4. Favorite place in Africa?
It would have to be Cape Town. I mean, what’s not to like? It has everything.

5. Why do you think African romance authors and stories set on the continent are important?

The stories here have an edge. They offer something different and, to my mind, more exciting. It’s not just the vibrant, drop-dead gorgeous people and the breathtaking settings -   it’s also the background of struggle, suffering and survival that puts energy into our lives and stories. We are a continent of people transforming ourselves while holding on to where we came from and honouring that. I love the way different cultures co-exist and intermingle here, and in my books.

6. Do you think romance stories set in Africa & Africans vital to the publishing industry? If yes/no, why do you say so?
Of course. Where have we been all this time? Who wants to read about Americans being wooed by millionaires in Spain? That’s not real for us. Which is not to say we don’t do fantasy. We have our own version of that. I love African stories where the hero stops at the Spaza shop or has to visit his Gogo first before his hot date (and then turns out to be a millionaire). And all the amazing local food …

7. What traditional food do you love, that one can only find in Africa?

Bobotie. Food is a big part of my books, so I’ll have to put it an upcoming one. I’m a vegetarian (like Andile in The Seeing Place), so I make a mean one with lentils. Those almond slivers, the turmeric, the blatjang … mmm.

Interview with Author Joanne MacGregor
Joanne stopped by to to chat with us a bit and hopefully get you excited for the book fair!

Q. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
When not writing books, Joanne Macgregor is a Counselling Psychologist in private practice and deals mainly with victims of crime and trauma. She consults and writes on alternate days, and in completely different head-spaces and physical environments. She started her professional life as a high school English Teacher, but has also worked as an IT trainer, a theatre dogsbody, and management consultant. Also as a waitress, an in-store frozen vegetable demonstrator, a model, and a make-up artist! Although she lives in the frenetic adrenaline-rush that is the city of Joburg, Joanne has always been in love with nature, and escapes into the mountains and the bush whenever she can. She’s a pretty good cook, grows vegetables, and is addicted to chilies, bulletproof coffee and Harry Potter.

First published at the age of seven, when The Star newspaper, a Johannesburg daily, printed one of her poems, Joanne is a bird of many feathers and enjoys writing for different ages. She is the author of several books for young adults including The Recoil Trilogy (YA dystopian romance); Scarred and Hushed (YA contemporary romance); and the eco-warrior series for younger YA readers. Her dark psychological thriller for adults Dark Whispers has been translated into Afrikaans as Skadustemme. She has also written two books for younger readers in the Jemima Jones series.

Q. What do you enjoy about being an author?

I enjoy that it allows me to combines so many aspects and activities that I love – being creative, doing research and learning so many new things, sweating the words out in wordsmithery, connecting with readers and my tribe of other writers, marketing, and leaving some kind of a legacy in the world in the form of my books. I also enjoy working independently rather than in the 9-5 corporate environment. Plus there’s the fact that on writing days, I can work in my pajamas!

Q. What type of romance stories do you write? And why?

I write Young Adult romances, which I think are read mostly by adults who are young at heart. I love the freshness and intensity of first love, first kiss, first heartbreak. YA fiction delivers a unique writing style – fast-paced, punchy, emotionally powerful, without too much waffling about the birds in the trees or the number of angels dancing on the head of a pin. As both a reader and writer, I am not a great fan of the “literary” fiction genre. Romances are an entertaining way to escape the pressures of the world. As a reader, I find them immersive and escapist in the best possible sense. And they offer ways of exploring deep human themes.

Q. Favorite place in Africa?

You’re asking me to choose between my beloveds!

My soul places are the uKhahlamaba Drakensberg, and the bushveld, specifically in the Waterberg region,

(where I draw close to my totem animal, the leopard).
Both bring me closer to nature, allowing me to find inspiration, a connection with God, and the type of beauty that fills my tank.

Q. Why do you think African romance authors and stories set on the continent are important?
I think we suffer from a hangover that local writing is inferior or boring in some way, or that only the books dealing with heavy political issues like apartheid, colonialism, The Struggle, etc., are “valid” or worth reading. There are many great and wonderful books that deal with these important issues, but I don’t think they encourage reading for pure pleasure. We simply do not have enough readers on this continent, and we need to get people (especially young people) addicted to reading. I believe the best way to do that is to provide books that readers can relate to, and which offer a fun reading experience. Worldwide, romances dominate the market because this is what they do, and Africa should not be different. If we don’t make it possible for writers to earn a living with books set in Africa and written for readers on this continent, then writers will set their novels elsewhere to tap into the international market (as I have done with some of mine), or simply give up writing. And that’s a shame, because we have stunning settings, magnificent stories and wonderful characters on this here continent!

Q. Do you think romance stories set in Africa & Africans vital to the publishing industry? If yes/no, why do you say so?

See my answered above. :)

Q. What traditional food do you love, that one can only find in Africa?

So many — milktart, koeksisters, bunny chows, Amarula Don Pedros, and waterblommetjie bredie (waterlily lamb stew) — but I guess my favourite is biltong!
